On the TranzCoastal I took the TranzCoastal train ride from Picton to Christchurch. As you can see on the right, most of the journey takes you along the coastline of the South Pacific and the part of the coastline it traverses is called the Kaikoura coastline. The train stops at Kaikoura for 10 minutes, it's longest stop, and Kaikoura is particularly noted for whale watching. The journey takes about six hours, including intermittent stops. There is also a running commentary by the driver whenever there is something interesting outside the window. The TranzAlpine route that you see on the map crosses the Southern Alps and that is also a very scenic journey. Some of the pictures were taken from inside a glass window resulting in unwanted reflections. The snow peaks that you see are the Southern Alps and you must remember that it was winter then.
