Die Daten, aus denen die Computeranimationen
für den Film erstellt wurden, basieren auf Messungen mittels
Schallwellen und auf der Kombination von Schwerkraftwirkung und
Satellitenradar.Es sind unwirtliche Tiefseewelten, in denen
Meeresbewohner leben, die vor wenigen Jahren noch unbekannt waren. Wie
können sich Tiere ohne Sonnenlicht entwickeln? Wie ist Leben in einer
durch unterseeische Vulkanausbrüche geprägten Umgebung möglich?

SS Great Eastern was an iron sailing steam ship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and built by J. Scott Russell & Co. at Millwall on the River Thames, London.
She was by far the largest ship ever built at the time of her 1858 launch, and had the capacity to carry 4,000 passengers around the world without refuelling. Her length of 692 feet (211 m) was only surpassed in 1899 by the 705-foot (215 m) 17,274-gross-ton RMS Oceanic, and her gross tonnage of 18,915 was only surpassed in 1901 by the 701-foot (214 m) 21,035-gross-ton RMS Celtic.
Brunel knew her affectionately as the "Great Babe". He died in 1859 shortly after her ill-fated maiden voyage, during which she was damaged by an explosion.
After repairs, she plied for several years as a passenger liner between Britain and America before being converted to a cable-laying ship and laying the first lasting transatlantic telegraph cable in 1866. Finishing her life as a floating music hall and advertising hoarding (for the famous department store Lewis's) in Liverpool, she was broken up in 1889.

The area filled with water and nurtured life, introduced agriculture, erected ancient empires, and introduced the three major religions of the world.
The Hawaiian Islands formed over a million years ago from a hotspot in
the earth's crust. Over time, molten lava from the hotspot continued to
grow and formed a chain of islands that are four times the height of
Mount Everest. The once desolate islands gave birth to life from the
ohia lehua plant and fruit flies, and were inhabited by Polynesian
islanders who followed the migration of the pacific golden plover.
Today, Hawaii is one of the most culturally diverse places in the world
and home to some of the rarest types of species.
The Great Rift Valley stretches 3,500 miles from Ethiopia to Mozambique
and is over 35 million years old. It was formed when extreme heat and
pressure forced a 1,000 mile-wide bubble of molten lava to the surface.
Today, the Great Valley Rift provides a surplus of pure sodium chloride
to the Afar people, nutrient-rich grass to herbivores and Masai
cattle-herders, as well as mineral infused hot springs and water for its
inhabitants. It is the birthplace of Ardi and the cause of curses on
European settlers looking to exploit the land's riches.
