TCDD-Steam in Turkey 1988 / Kreig finale part- 2

As described in part 1, the decline of steam traction in Turkey left the German Kreigslok "war locomotive" as the last active class. One of the final pockets to be almost exclusively worked by steam was a series of interconnecting branch lines serving the towns of Burdur, Dinar, Esparta, and Egirdir.

For many years, this system was worked by Prussian State railway type of designs, the G8 and G10s, and footage of these locomotives will appear here in another film, but for now, we see this scenic area being served by a later generation of German engines in their last days.

Trains were inevitably mixed, and shunting could take place at intermediate stations to drop off wagons. We were there in October, as trains were busy transporting sugar beet, which was then in season. The final shot is of a heavy sugar beet train requiring a banker (assisting loco) at the rear.

Thanks go to Jeremy de Barr who was the driver on this trip and to Planet Television, responsible for the digital transfer from 8mm film.
