TCDD-Steam in Turkey / Zonguldak - Çaycuma suburban trains

During the 1980s, Turkey was still operating many different classes of steam locomotives, on various types of daily service. The country seemed quite "exotic", with diverse landscapes and beautiful scenery. The people we met were always hospitable, helpful and friendly,

Here we see two types of American locomotives: "Skyliners" (their domes and sand boxes encased by a faring gave them a semi-streamlined appearance) built by Vulcan Foundry, and USATC S200 "Middle East" Class, built by ALCO, Baldwin, Lima.

The carriages are of mixed German origin, including some pre-WW2 "Hechtewagen", with their tapered ends. The Black Sea forms a backdrop, and the weather was unusually good, as the Black Sea coast is often dull and overcast in summer. Note many doors are open with passengers hanging out.

Taken while touring Turkey with a group organised and led by Günther Oxco, who worked and drove very hard........

Filmed originally on Super 8mm live sound film, and transferred courtesy Planet Television.
